Andorra is not a country most people can place on a map. Landlocked between France and Spain, this tiny principality covers just 468 square kilometres — smaller than most cities. But within those square kilometres lie some of the purest, most mineral-rich springs in Europe.
We source the mineral water base for every Zero Lines formulation from one spring in the Andorran Pyrenees. Here's why this specific geography produces water that genuinely benefits skin.
Where Does Andorra's Spring Water Come From?
The Pyrenees are geologically young mountains, formed by the collision of the Iberian and Eurasian plates between 40 and 20 million years ago. Unlike older mountain ranges that have been worn down by erosion, the Pyrenees retain sharp relief, deep aquifers, and extensive exposed granite.
Andorra sits at the heart of the range, at an average elevation of 1,996 metres, and its capital is the highest in Europe. Height does real work here: altitude changes water, from its temperature to its mineral load. The springs themselves emerge from aquifers that have spent 15–25 years underground, protected from surface contamination by kilometres of impermeable rock.
What Minerals Are in Andorran Spring Water?

The source carries a mineral profile close to the skin's own Natural Moisturising Factors:
- Zinc: a cofactor for the enzymes behind barrier repair
- Selenium: required by the skin's own antioxidant enzymes
- Copper: involved in collagen and elastin cross-linking
- Magnesium: present across the reactions behind barrier repair and lipid synthesis
- Low sodium: so it does not draw moisture out of the skin osmotically
Figures to the milligram belong on a certificate of analysis, and a certificate belongs to a batch. Nothing has been released yet, so there is no batch to certify — when there is, it will be published with the laboratory's name on it.
Why Andorra, Not Elsewhere?
The base for every Zero Lines formulation comes from one spring in the Andorran Pyrenees, fed by aquifers that have spent fifteen to twenty-five years underground beneath kilometres of impermeable rock.
We tested mineral waters from 14 springs across the Pyrenees, the Alps, and the Cantabrian Mountains before selecting our Andorran source. The deciding factors were:
- Consistency: Some springs showed seasonal variation of 30% or more in mineral content. Our source varies by less than 5% year-round.
- Purity: A protected watershed with no agricultural runoff and no industrial or urban pollution upstream.
- Temperature stability: The spring emerges at 9°C year-round, preserving dissolved gases and mineral stability.
- Sustainability: The natural flow rate exceeds our needs by a factor of 100, meaning we never stress the aquifer.
The climate that protects this watershed is also a test for skin. Alpine dryness shapes skincare needs as much as Mediterranean humidity does, and we formulate with both in mind.
How Does the Water Get from Spring to Serum?
The water travels from the spring to our Barcelona laboratory by insulated tanker within 48 hours of collection. It is never filtered, and never treated with UV or ozone. The only processing is a fifteen-second pasteurisation at 72°C — long enough for microbiological safety, brief enough to leave the mineral profile intact.
This water then becomes the solvent for every formulation in the Zero Lines Protocol: the Bio-Signal Face Serum, the Day Cream, the Night Cream, and the Peeling Gel. In each, the mineral content works as a functional ingredient, supporting the actives layered into it.

Mineral Water vs. Purified Water in Skincare
Most cosmetic formulations use purified, deionised, or reverse-osmosis water as their base. This water is stripped of all minerals, creating a blank solvent that doesn't interfere with other ingredients. It's cheap, consistent, and easy to source. But it's also biologically inert.
Mineral water, by contrast, brings its own biological activity. The calcium supports cell differentiation. The magnesium enables enzymatic reactions. The silica contributes to connective tissue integrity. When these minerals are present in the formulation base, they complement the actives rather than simply dissolving them.
We noticed the difference early in development. The same recipe behaves differently on a mineral base: it spreads more evenly, and it leaves skin looking visibly smoother than the purified-water version does. The minerals are not passengers. They work.
"We've tested dozens of water sources across Europe. The Andorran spring was the only one where the mineral profile matched the skin's NMF closely enough to function as an active ingredient, not just a solvent."

The Future of Water in Skincare
Water quality is becoming a recognised variable in formulation science. Research published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (2024) found that the mineral content of formulation water affects both active-ingredient stability and skin penetration.
High-calcium water, for instance, stabilises vitamin C formulations by chelating metal ions that catalyse oxidation. Magnesium-rich water enhances the activity of niacinamide by supporting the NAD+ synthesis pathway. None of this is abstract chemistry. The effects repeat batch after batch, and they change how a formulation performs.
At Zero Lines, we believe the industry will eventually recognise formulation water as an ingredient in its own right. Until then, we're content to be among the few brands that treat it that way.
