Understanding Your Skin Type: A Guide to the Zero Lines Analyzer

Ask someone their skin type and you'll usually get a confident answer: "I'm oily." "I'm combination." "I'm sensitive." But when we analyse these same people with our AI Skin Analyser, we find that roughly 60% have misidentified their type. The oily-skinned person is actually dehydrated. The sensitive person is using products that compromise their barrier. The combination person has normal skin with a single reactive area.

Getting your skin type right matters because it determines everything else: which products you use, in what order, and at what frequency. Get it wrong, and even the best products can underperform or cause problems.

Why Skin Type Is Hard to Self-Diagnose

Skin type isn't a fixed characteristic like blood type. It changes with:

This variability means that a skin type assessment based on how your skin feels right now — or how it felt five years ago — is often inaccurate.

The Four (Actually Five) Skin Types

Dermatologists classify skin into four primary types, with a fifth condition that can overlap with any of them:

Normal

Balanced oil production, minimal sensitivity, small pores, even tone. This is the baseline that most skincare is benchmarked against. In reality, "normal" skin is increasingly rare in adults over 25.

Dry

Low sebum production, tight feeling after cleansing, visible flaking, fine lines that appear deeper than they are. True dry skin is genetic — it's not caused by dehydration (though dehydration makes it worse).

Oily

Excess sebum production, shiny appearance by midday, enlarged pores, tendency toward congestion and breakouts. Oily skin is also largely genetic, though it can be exacerbated by hormones and certain products.

Combination

Oily in the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) and normal or dry on the cheeks. This is the most common skin type in adults — and the most confusing to treat, since different areas need different care.

Sensitive (A Condition, Not a Type)

Reactive skin that stings, flushes, or develops rashes in response to products, temperature changes, or stress. Sensitivity can occur with any of the four primary types. It's often caused or worsened by barrier damage rather than being purely genetic.

How the Zero Lines Analyzer Works

Our AI Skin Analyser takes a different approach. Instead of asking you to self-identify, it evaluates objective data:

Step 1: Photo Analysis — You upload a facial photo in natural light. Our AI, powered by GPT-4o, analyses texture, tone, pore size, redness, pigmentation, and visible signs of ageing. It detects patterns that are invisible to the naked eye.

Step 2: Lifestyle Questionnaire — Ten questions about your age, climate, current routine, sleep, stress, and concerns. This provides context that photo analysis alone cannot capture.

Step 3: Correlation — The AI correlates visual findings with lifestyle factors to determine not just your current skin state, but your underlying skin type and the factors that are modifying it.

Step 4: Personalised Protocol — Based on the analysis, the system recommends a specific sequence of Zero Lines products, adjusted for your skin type, concerns, and environment.

What Makes It Different

Most skin type quizzes ask subjective questions: "How does your skin feel at 3 PM?" "Do you experience tightness after cleansing?" These questions are vulnerable to bias, recall error, and the influence of current products.

The Zero Lines Analyser combines computer vision with structured data. It doesn't ask how your skin feels — it looks at how your skin actually appears. The questionnaire provides context, but the photo analysis provides objectivity.

Over 20,000 people have used the analyser to date. The most common revelation? "I thought I had oily skin, but I'm actually dehydrated." Once that distinction is made, the entire approach to skincare changes.

Skin Type Can Change

We recommend re-analysing your skin every 3–6 months, or whenever you notice significant changes. Skin type isn't fixed — it evolves with age, environment, hormones, and lifestyle. A protocol that worked perfectly in summer might need adjustment for winter. A routine that suited you at 35 may need updating at 45.

The analyser tracks changes over time, showing you how your skin responds to the protocol and when adjustments are needed.

Why Skin Type Changes

Your skin type at 20 is not your skin type at 40. Hormonal shifts — puberty, pregnancy, menopause — alter sebum production. Ageing reduces barrier function, making previously resilient skin more sensitive. Climate changes, medication, and stress can all shift skin behaviour. And the products you use can actually change your skin type over time — aggressive cleansers can transform oily skin into dehydrated skin, while heavy moisturisers can make normal skin sluggish.

This is why static skin typing (the categories you were assigned once and never reassessed) is fundamentally flawed. Skin is dynamic, and effective skincare must adapt to its changing needs.

Beyond the Four Types

The traditional four-type system (oily, dry, combination, normal) is a useful starting point but dramatically oversimplified. Modern dermatology recognises additional dimensions: sensitivity (reactive vs. resilient), pigmentation (prone to dark spots vs. not), and wrinkling (tendency to form lines vs. not). These dimensions interact — someone can be oily and sensitive, or dry and pigmentation-prone.

The Zero Lines AI Skin Analyser evaluates multiple dimensions simultaneously: oil production, hydration, sensitivity, pigmentation, wrinkle depth, pore size, and texture. The result is a nuanced profile that captures the complexity real skin possesses — not a single label, but a detailed map of your skin's current state and trajectory.

"Skin type isn't who you are — it's what your skin is doing right now. Treat it as dynamic, and your skincare will always be relevant. Treat it as fixed, and you'll always be behind."
